Romantic movies are amazing!! Well… for a lot of people anyway. They may not be everyone’s cup of tea but once in a while, it’s really great to watch the story of lovers unfold and to share in their joy as well as their pain. Romantic movies are perfect for date nights, Valentine’s Day or even a day you spend alone (nothing says you can’t enjoy a day alone π). So, here’s a list of some amazing movies you should watch if you’re in the mood for romance, passion and lots of angst π
Now, I’m not a big fan of romantic films but once in a while, I watch one that captures my heart and makes me believe in the enduring power of love. These movies are some of them. They cover many genres from teen romance to historical films and even, sci-fi.

So, here’s the list!
1. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018)
When this movie came out in August, 2018, it went viral very quickly. Everyone was raving about how cute the couple was (and how hot the main guy was too…) So I decided to watch it and thankfully, I did not regret it!
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before follows the story of Lara Jean (Lana Condor), a high school junior who writes love letters to each of her crushes and keeps them in a box. Her life is turned upside down when the letters are mailed.
This movie is cute, there’s lots of drama and the actors are pretty good. As a matter of fact, this movie received such a great reception that there’s going to be a sequel!
2. The Age of Adaline (2015)
The Age of Adaline is one of those movies that captures the heart by being not just romantic but also very magical.
The story follows Adaline Bowman (Blake Lively), a woman who stops ageing after an accident. She lives a long life moving from place to place to avoid getting caught until she meets Ellis Jones (Michiel Huisman), a man who challenges her to love.
There’s a lot more in this movie that I’m not going to spoil for you but a note of warning; I did not see that twist coming! Also, Harrison Ford stars in it so go watch!
3. Love, Simon (2018)
It’s physically impossible for me to make a list of romantic movies (or any movies) without including Love, Simon. This movie is based on Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli which is one of my best books ever and I love the movie almost as much.
The story centers on Simon Spier (Nick Robinson), a closeted gay boy in high school who’s being blackmailed by another student, Martin (Logan Miller). Martin found out his secret when he comes across emails between Simon and another boy, Blue. On top of that, Simon is also trying to figure out the identity of Blue.
This movie is not just a top romantic film, it’s also very important and I’m so glad it was produced.
4. Cloud Atlas (2012)
I can never forget the first time I heard of this movie. My elder sister had watched it and she couldn’t stop talking about it. When I finally watched it, I realized why. This is hands-down one of my top five movies of all time (romance or otherwise).
Cloud Atlas is a movie which follows the actions of several individuals over six different time lines. The movie shows how the lives of people can be intertwined over centuries and how the actions of one person can change the course of another’s life in a different age.
Although, this movie is very philosophical, it includes a lot of forbidden love, romance and there are many couples. I’ve watched this movie at least five times and I love it more each time. A tip for you: Pay attention when you watch this movie.
5. The Notebook (2004)
Can any list of top romantic movies ever be complete without a movie adaptation of a Nicholas Sparksβ book? Nope, I don’t think so π
The Notebook is about a poor country boy, Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) and a rich girl, Allie (Rachel McAdams) whose love spans decades and remains strong despite separation (due to social differences), war and illness.
This is one of those movies that most people would mention instantly if asked for a romantic movie recommendation and it totally deserves a spot on this list!
6. Crazy Rich Asians (2018)
This movie released about the same time as To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and there was almost as much hype about it! Personally, I had had very little interest in the book so I wasn’t interested in the movie. But everyone was talking about it and I finally went with the hype. And yes, it was awesome!
The story follows Rachel Chu (Constance Wu), a Chinese-American professor who goes to attend her boyfriend’s best friendβs wedding in Singapore and finds out that her boyfriend, Nick (Henry Golding) is the heir of a multi-billion dollar company. Rachel has to deal with jealous socialites (who were hoping to catch Singapore’s most eligible bachelor), weird relatives and worst of all, Nick’s evil mother (Michelle Yeoh).
First of all, if you’re averse to displays of wealth, this movie is not for you. There was so much money in it; designer dresses, diamonds and precious jewels and incredibly extravagant events. It was so beautiful to watch the love between Rachel and Nick endure despite the βforcesβ trying to tear them apart. Crazy Rich Asians offers a lovely twist to the βpoor girl meets rich boyβ trope and it’s so worth the time you’ll spend watching it!
7. Carol (2015)
If you’re a fan of forbidden love and historical romantic movies, Iβve got the perfect movie for you!
Carol is the story of a lesbian couple, Carol Aird (Cate Blanchett) and Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) whose forbidden love in the early 1950s threatens their lives and Carol’s relationship with her daughter, Rindy.
This movie is beautiful and sad and it shows just how hard life was for the homosexual community in the 20th century and how true love would always persist despite hate. Also, if you thought Cate Blanchett was oozing sex appeal in Thor 3 or Oceans 8, I’m pleased to tell you there’s a lot more here! π
8. Me Before You (2016)
When I heard that my favourite Khaleesi was starring in a romantic movie, I had my doubts about it. It’s hard to imagine the Mother of Dragons in a romance role but Emilia Clarke pulled it off incredibly!
Me Before You follows the love story between Louisa Clark (Emilia Clarke), a happy, colourful woman and Will Traynor (Sam Claflin), a former banker who is now paralyzed.
If you haven’t watched this yet, watch it and get some tissues ready. You’ll need them. This movie absolutely broke my heart! It’s beautiful and so sad too.
9. Coming to America (1988)
A classic should always be on a list of top romantic movies to watch and there are few other classics that show a happy love as well as Coming to America.
This movie centres on Prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy) who moves to America from the prosperous land of Zamunda with his friend, Semmi (Arsenio Hall). They arrive under the guise of poor, foreign students in a bid to find a woman who would want Akeem regardless of his wealth. The love story between Akeem and Lisa McDowell (Shari Headley) is cute and funny and just the kind of romantic comedy you need to watch!
This movie is filled with so many tropes, but it’s also funny and cute so go watch it!
10. About Time (2013)
This romantic movie is one of my favourites because it’s not just about love, it’s also about family, friendship, growth and acceptance.
This movie follows the story of Tim Lake (Domhnall Gleeson) who finds out that he can travel through time. He uses his ability to change his past thus finding his true love, Mary (Rachel McAdams).
About Time is the love story of Tim and Mary. It’s also the story of how one man uses his power not for evil or wealth or success but to change his life and pursue total happiness.
So, that’s the end! If you’re interested in romance movies, romantic comedies and in general, love stories, I hope this list helps you find the perfect movie to watch.

I’ve literally watched every single title in this list, except for Cloud Atlas, and I’m now extremely intrigued?
I am a sucker for rom-coms and all things romantic, so it’s not really a surprise that I’ve watched (and loved, by the way) them all, but all the things I had heard about Cloud Atlas before had been more about the phylosophical side of the story rather than the romance. I will definitely add it to my to-watch list, then!
Coming to America truly is an absolute classic and I adore it! I remember watching it as a kid and still laughing over the same scenes. I’ve also heard recently they’ll be coming up with a sequel? I’m super excited already. Hopefuly, it will be less sexist, lol.
Another favorite romance movie of mine is The Space Between Us. It’s a super interesting movie, because it’s actually a mix with sci-fi, but in a contemporary setting? I hardly ever watch romance + (anything), like historical romance, or fantastical romance, and that’s why I was so surprised by how much I adored The Space Between Us. I highly recommend if you have never watched it!
Amazing list! π€©
